David Bowie Needs Prayers For Repose, Not Sentimental Reverie

Most people are aware that David Bowie died today after an 18-month battle with liver cancer.  For several decades he was a rock star of some renown - and notoriety.  I first want to express condolences to his family and friends and offer prayers for the repose of his soul.  What will now follow is not so much directed at his memory as it is directed towards those who are inappropriately lionizing him.  Even that must be narrowed down a bit, for while we might expect such adulation to come from those who are caught up on rock culture - with its attendant depravity - I'm aghast to see it coming from those who are otherwise faithful Catholics.

Change-Agent Of Evil
My facebook wall was awash with posts mourning his passing.  Some said that his music "was part of their youth".  Yes, some offered an "RIP" or some prayers, but I only saw one post questioning the adulation being heaped upon Bowie.  Some - even priests - praised his talent and quoted his songs.  Others remarked that he was a "pioneer".  That he was.  He was one of the first to glamorize the "androgynous look", bordering on cross-dressing.  He admitted he was bisexual.  Some of his performances included the simulation of sexual acts.  My fellow Catholics (you know who you are!), how does this escape you?

It does seem at times that while faithful Catholics can be very sober and vigilant, there is often a strange "disconnect" when it comes to figures in sports and/or entertainment.  Why is that?  Is it because they want the emotions caused by these "stars" so much that they'll allow the "stars" a "pass" when it comes to their immoral lives and proclivities?  What is it?  I don't get how good people can be so inconsistent as to turn a blind eye towards entertainment idols when they would never do so for other "ordinary" people.

Even the Vatican got swept up in the worldly group-think.  Cardinal Ravasi, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, put out a tweet lauding Bowie and quoting from one of his songs.  I would say that I'm surprised but I'm not.  Given that this is the same office that spewed forth the "bimbo video" and its "bsdm display", we can say that Ravasi is simply being typical.  Still, it's a disgrace to see a Prince of the Church lolly-gagging with silliness while so many truly pressing issues need to be addressed by the Church.  One could have hoped that the Cardinal might have offered prayers for the repose of Bowie's soul; alas, that did not happen.

I asked questions in the preceding paragraphs, for which I cannot fathom answers.  Does anyone know?  The com-box is open (subject to moderation, of course).

  1. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ARTICLE. 2. Doesn't surprise me about the Vatican giving him praise either. Not one bit. Yes, he was extremely talented, but did he use his talents the right way? He steeped himself in worldly and perverted ways. He needs LOTS of prayer. I watched his last video that was recorded just a few days before he died, I think it was on 'The Blaze'. He said it was his last gift to the world, but it was so full of creepy occultism I could hardly finish it. May Jesus have MERCY on his soul.

And yes Melissa, Our Lady of America PRAY FOR US, that we may fulfill your requests and receive the grace of purity once more in this Country that is totally morally bankrupt at the present.

  3. The Major Tom lyrics Cdl Ravasi emphasized are a heroine addict's cry for help; searching for meaning, for a way to fill the yearning in his heart, and finding nothing; lost.

The Church has the answer to this yearning. Cdl Ravasi instead chose to present the delusional addict's cry for help as the answer for the rest of a lost world.

Jesus Christ, crucified, risen, calling His children home; that should be presented in season and out, around the clock 24/7. Instead, crickets.

    1. David Bowie was not a heroin user. What you've written is bullshit.

    2. I too found no documentation for heroin usage. However, he did have a serious cocaine problem. That said, I too thought Ravasi's tweet incredibly stupid.

    3. Don't really care about Bowie enough to know one way or another. Seems you do.

After the Ravasi tweet on Major Tom, who used its lyrics as a eulogy, I wikkied Major Tom. That is the extent of my knowledge, (and all it ever will be).

Whoever wrote the wikki entry attributed to Bowie that he considered it auto-biographical and that Major Tom was a strung out junkie blasting off into the stars. It references heroin addiction in the entry

Whatever, man. Read it yourself if you want. Or not.

  4. Does your bible not say "judge not lest ye be judged" somewhere? The splinter that may or may not be in David Bowie's eye was nothing compared to the logs in the eyes of the catholic church. If you don't like his music that's your opinion, but don't judge him on your narrow minded criteria cuz he was way past anything your feeble minds can contemplate.

It's the 21st century. You've been burning the wrong books. You're stardust whether you believe it or not. Just. Like. Ziggy.

    1. Lemmee see... You admonish me not to judge in your first sentence. Then the rest of your screed is itself a big judgmental rant - that is, the part that isn't a bunch of jumbled gobblygook.
To my other readers - "ZachsMind" is living proof of the mental and cultural rot foisted on the world by Bowie and his colleagues. Let's continue to pray for them. Unlike Bowie, Zach still has time to repent.

  5. Bowie was pretty weird in his youth but had settled down after his marriage. Old age, parenthood and ill health slowed him way down. Hopefully he had time to repent. However that a cardinal would praise such a person is pathetic.

  6. Oh my! There's that confusion again regarding "don't judge"... From what I recall in the New Testament, we are not to judge people (i.e., we don't know what's in their hearts and so don't know if they are doomed to hell or not), BUT we certainly DO judge their actions and are called to condemn bad behavior. And there seems to have been some bad behaviour in Bowie's life. It's "Hate the sin but love the sinner"; and we should pray for the repose of his soul. --- meaculpa
