Does The Pope Disdain Large Families?

There is something about planes and microphones that make for a toxic combination for Pope Francis.  A few days ago I said his latest trip (at the time) was an occasion for two serious gaffes.  I haven't even gotten to that second gaffe before this latest, during his return trip to Rome from the Vatican.

While affirming the Church's ban on contraception, he said that Catholics don't have to "breed like rabbits."  That phrase is his.  The Holy Father just insulted millions of Catholics who are generous with life and who welcome their children, often with considerable sacrifice.

He gave a "case in point" when he recently encountered a woman who had seven cesarean sections and was pregnant with her eighth.  He admitted to scolding her for conceiving, telling her "that was an irresponsibility" and judging her for "tempting God".  Consider:
  1. The child whose conception the Pope lamented, exists.  He/she is in the image and likeness of God.  Mother Teresa said once that saying there are too many children is like saying there are too many flowers.
  2. The Holy Father, the Vicar of Christ, has just lamented the conception of a child.  I hope and pray that this child never learns of this, that the Holy Father held his/her existence as a "temptation of God".
  3. How many abortions did the Holy Father unwittingly justify today?  How many "health of the mother" abortion excuses did the Holy Father aid and abet?
  4. In case the Holy Father hasn't noticed, western civilization is suffering a population atrophy.  Parishes are closing right and left because of the dwindling population.  In light of this he did the worst thing possible: belittling faithful Catholic parents by saying that they breed like animals.  In fact, they are fulfilling God's command to "be fruitful and multiply".
I for one salute my Catholic and Christian friends who have large families.  They are the hope for our Church.  The real irresponsibility lies in disparagement of these holy families.

  1. Actually the pope didn't use the word "breed" at all, the media supplied that. He said people didn't have to "be" like rabbits. You can either think that to mean having many offspring over a long period of time or constantly having sex and producing a child every year or so. Clearly the media took it as having a lot of sex, but I think the pope (WRONGLY) was suggesting that Catholics should no longer have large families because big families are some how "irresponsible" (a term used by the crowd who believe the earth is over populated). Either way, I think he was wrong and once more he has given secular society something to twist and use against traditional Catholic families. It just never ends with this pope.

Quote from his speech: "Some think, excuse me if I use the word, that in order to be good Catholics, we have to be like rabbits - but no," he said, adding the Church promoted "responsible parenthood".

    1. I would whole heartedly agree with the notion that the pope does not WANT traditional Families, nor traditional Chapels, nor traditional Priests or Nuns. I believe that the pope is trying to make Catholicism and Communism a joint religion with one perspective and that is that the first sacrament of Catholicism is "Materialism." Materialism comes first, and must guide all the spiritual exercises and doctrines of the Church. That all of his statements are Modernistic, and that anything Pre Vatican, including the very Words of Jesus Christ i.e. "Turn the Other Cheek," are of no use to his NEW RELIGION.

  2. The Rabbit comparison was very wrong. I addressed it on my blog here: http://dsdoconnor.com/2015/01/20/dear-pope-francis-why-that-word/

  3. There is a bit of an overreaction here. We must put the pope's actual words into context. He said, "be like rabbits", not "breed". He was actually defending large families by noting the criticism they often receive with the caveat that couples should be responsible.

    1. SFA, trying to squeeze this pope's nonsensical words into a context that retains any level of Catholicity is a losing battle. The sooner you come to terms with the fact that he is a bum, (and not the first pope to be so, I might add) the sooner your vision will come back into focus.

  4. All, he did use the word "be" instead of "breed". However, in this context I believe that is a distinction without a difference.
