Yesterday the ACLU outdid themselves in proliferation of nonsense by pompously declaring that with regard to contraceptive coverage in the Obama Hell Bill, Catholic leaders “cannot interfere” into the matter “by turning their religious beliefs into federal law.”
"Turning their religious beliefs into federal law"!!?! What? The bishops have no inate power to "turn their relgious beliefs into federal law". What they do have, however, is the right to bring their religious beliefs into the public square, as does any other interest group - and yes, ACLU, interest groups are allowed to exists and they do have First Amendment rights!
But wait! There's more! “Religious leaders are free to express their belief that birth control is immoral, but they cannot interfere in our personal decision making by turning their religious beliefs into federal law and taking away access to critical health care,” the statement concluded. Dear ACLU, please be sitting down when I tell you this minor fact. Anyone who lobbies, be they individuals or groups, brings their religious (or anti-religious, as case may be) beliefs with them as they seek to influence law. It is not only our right but our responsibility to do so. Please get used to it.
Dear ACLU, to soften the blow of getting used to it, I present to you now the sterling example of FORMER Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. At the Catholic Community Conference this past summer in Washington DC, Pelosi stated she believes she must pursue public policies "in keeping with the values" of Jesus Christ, "The Word made Flesh." We're certain that she "turned her religious beliefs into federal law", such as her "religious beliefs" might be. Read it for yourselves! Better yet, see it for yourselves!
Now did you take the FORMER Speaker aside to chide her about (oh what is that phrase you used...oh yes!) turning her religious beliefs into federal law? I didn't think so! As we all know, the ACLU ardently pursues a progressive slant towards public policy. As long as the "religious belief" in question falls within your progressive criterion, why, you're just happy to let it go! But if that belief espouses traditional, conservative beliefs, why...why, you simply won't brook it!
Guys, nice try but no cigar! We're onto you! Get used to it!
