Father Marcel Guarnizo, about
whom I've written in the past, recently published some
thoughts regarding the presidential race this year. We do need a president who will respect and uphold the US Constitution and not just give it lip service. For the record, I will be voting for Cruz during Maryland's primaries in April.
I would like to know what Father Guarnizo has against Roman Catholic Marco Rubio other than the fact that he looks younger than Ted Cruz, a Baptist, even though both are approximately the same age. Rubio is 43, and Cruz just turned 44?
ReplyDeleteJanet,
ReplyDeleteI like Ted Cruz personally, but here are some things you need to consider before deciding whether or not to vote for him--Father G. and all Catholics should, too. I know that many conservative minded Catholics do not agree with Rubio on immigration. Well, I don't either. However, abortion is the most important of all issues, and the fact is, Rubio has NO EXCEPTIONS to the banning of abortion. A little known fact about Cruz is that he does hold the "life of the mother" exception. Plus, he want to relegate many important moral issues to the states that are too grave to become "state issues," and need to be banned at the federal level--gay marriage, abortion, marijuana.

I have seen no direct quote from Cruz stating that he supports that exception; therefore I take these other sources with a grain of salt. In terms of federal ban, I tend to agree. However, the US is a constitutional republic. The only way that protection will happen is via a constitutional amendment that defines personhood as commencing when sperm fertilizes egg. Then the person enjoys 14th amendment protections.
DeleteThat won't happen until the Constitution is once again held to be the basis of all national law. That takes us back to the main point of Father's article.
Abortion is only legal when done by Doctors or under their direction. It seems abortion could also be made illegal for Doctors...it was for many years in this country before 1973. For now the best way to discourage Doctors from doing a procedure is to sue them as much as possible.
DeleteCruz, si! Trump, no!
ReplyDeleteTrump scares me. A lot. He is a dangerous man. He reminds me of an el Duce in the making. Yes, the trains will run on time. But at what cost? Most candidates are unqualified this year; really bad. But Trump? Please, no.
Trouble is, Trump is probably the only one who can beat the socialist agenda on the other side of the aisle.
ReplyDeleteAlso, please keep in mind that Catholic moralities in the public square under our historic and current crop of elected Katholic politicians has done nothing but slowly disappear.
I have some hope that Rubio is different than the current crop of elected "Katholic politicians" you refer to... take the time to watch this video and the one that starts automatically following:

When I first saw this, I was teary-eyed. Rubio is spot on about this very important issue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwaOOmHd-UE
ReplyDeleteI pray he gains support and momentum in the coming weeks, especially among Catholics!
Also, please watch this video. Note that Cruz does not want to ban legal marijuana, but give that matter back to the states. He says the same here about abortion, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJpCtq8eD9Y
Let's just take abortion alone. It IS NOT a matter for the states, because it is literally torture and death for innocent children, and our Constitution explicitly forbids torture of any kind. Thus, abortion is unconstitutional and, to my mind, Ted Cruz should know that since he is a constitutional expert. Yes, Ted Cruz would have to go through Congress to enact a federal ban on all abortion, but that is what he should be advocating, instead of saying it is "a matter for the states." Same with marijuana. He should be advocating a ban. And, BTW, both McCain and Palin said abortion was "a state issue," too.

Dawn, thank you very much for that link.
DeleteI have always felt Senator Rubio is the most articulate candidate, superior even to Cruz. His immigration stance and ties to the establishment have worried me. But that defense of life, THE issue of our day, rocked. He totally, completely gets it for all the right reasons and is unabashed to connect his faith to his policy. That ONE issue qualifies him strongly to win the nomination. No one has presented an unapologetic, articulate defense of the unborn to an opposing articulate, antagonist like that. Very impressive.
We are facing God's judgement for what our nation has done, and we need a leader like Rubio. Or Cruz.
Here is a video of Rubio getting attacked for his Christian views on same-sex marriage:

Rape and incest have been demonstrated not to be healed by abortion but abortion only adds to the evil and to the pain and of course causes death of the person who happened to be allowed by God to be conceived as a result of
ReplyDeletesin. Many such real -life accounts can be found on Lifesitenew.com.
What is confusing about saving the life of the mother in cases of pregnancy and childbirth is that the Catholic church has always permitted physicians to choose which life to save if only one ( mother or unborn) can be saved.
This cannot be done by direct killing of the infant, or mother but for instance a pregnant mother could be treated for cancer by surgery or chemotherapy even if this would result in the death of the unborn child.
Another example, noted by Dr. Ben Carson is that of removal of the fallopian tube of a woman along with the embryo if a tubal pregnancy is detected. Rubio, following Catholic medical practice norms based on the Natural Law is not opposed to these practices.
