This sacrilege happened at Sacred Heart of Mary Church in the Dundalk area of Baltimore yesterday. Almost as scandalous as the dance hall music is the reaction of a lot of the viewers. They simply show the abysmal state of catechesis that has dumbed down the sensum fideli of many Catholics today.
One might argue that at least this doesn't rise to the level of scandal that might be found at St. Matthews on Loch Raven Boulevard. However: lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivandi. The behavior of Auxiliary Bishop Madden illustrates quite starkly that principle. He celebrated yesterday's Sacred Heart debacle. Moreover, in the past, he has lent his support to the gay-pandering dissidence at St. Matthew's.
The sane parishioners that remain in that parish need to rebuke that pastor: both in word and in the withholding of financial support.
Folks, you need to run away from ALL Novus Ordo "tables"!
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect, I'm not a fan of polka masses, but there is no genre that is not adaptable to the sacred. I remind all the "we should do it the traditional way with Gregorian chant just like a medieval monastery" crowd that, for the pressure to push polyphony, the whole of China was lost.
ReplyDeleteAs you watched that video or read the idiotic comments, what was the focus? It was on Polish culture, the "novelty", the "fun" etc - everything but the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. I'm not so sure about the China situation. I don't think that's relevant. The Churches here at one time offered only reverential music and worship. They have degraded to the silly tripe that you just watched. Was that ever the situation in China? By the way, the Church in China is indeed endangered precisely because of Pope Francis's insistence that the Church conform to local culture, but that is a topic worthy of its own post.
Delete"With all due respect", what I saw in that video was an abomination. How can anyone watching that opening procession worship with a straight face or sincere heart? How can anyone stop from cringing at their phony reverence of the altar during that mess? No, I'm afraid there are plenty of music styles that are simply not adaptable to the sacred. And on top of all the musical garbage, insincere preening from the clergy, and general silliness, I feel bad for the poor altar boy in a sea of altar girls and middle-aged women in pantsuits. As Baltimore continues to cluster and eventually close more of their parishes and schools, can we honestly look at displays like this and continue to ask, "Why don't we have enough priests? Why don't we have enough faithful in the pews?"
DeleteJohn, I heartily agree with you. These sorts of abominations just seem to attract the severe, unstable folks who tell us: it must be done JUST THIS WAY! Ppl need to stop thinking the whole world is lost who doesn't attend Latin Masses. "Latin and Lace do not the True Church make". No, the truth is more complicated than that.
DeleteI had hoped the silliness was a thing of the past. Arlington is relatively tame compared to some of these crazy places. We have the social hall syndrome, but I haven't been afraid to go a Mass in Arlington for a long time. And since we have family in several different parishes we get around a bit. Keep the craziness on the other side of the river. We have enough to deal with having Richmond to our south.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you regarding the types appropriate for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (and I sing in two scholas), but I can see why this doesn't disturb the average, poorly catechized pew sitter. Is there really a substantial difference between polka music and the usual pop/soft rock music that one usually hears? It doesn't belong at Mass, but at least it is a true folk music of nation/culture.
