Several weeks ago, Cardinal Blaise Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, announced his intentions to bestow upon pro-abortion and pro-gay U.S. Senator Dick Durbin a "lifetime achievement award" for his support of - you guessed it! - illegal immigrants crashing through our southern borders. This award was supposed to have been bestowed in November
Immediately Bishop Paprocki and Archbishop Cordileone urged Cupich to cancel that award. Other bishops soon followed in their condemnation of that award. In the words of Complicit Clergy, Cupich told them to "pound sand". Of course Cupich holds the slaughter of babies to be of little importance. Recall that as Bishop of Spokane, Cupich forbade his priests from participating in the local 40 Days for Life efforts in his diocese.
Pope Leo was asked about this Cupich-Durbin scandal. He responded by adding his own verbal manure to the pile. Not only does he trot out the "seamless garmet" tripe, but also slanders faithful Catholics and good pro-life people in the process. Please watch below the jump-break.
He erroneously claims that someone who supports the death penalty is not truly pro-life, contradicting scores of previous popes and theologians (some saints and Doctors of the Church) who acknowledge the licit use of the death penalty. Then he said "these are complex issues...I don't know if anyone has all the truth on them.." WRONG! These matters are really quite simple. They are only "complex" to those who don't want to adhere to Church teaching as it has stood through the centuries. The Church has always held abortion to be a heinous issue, while acknowledging the state's prerogative and even obligation to use the death penalty.
Now for all of the "pope-splainers" who were so quick on the trigger when Francis plopped his stinkers, this pope is American, speaking unmistakable English. No one can excuse his bombast as "a poor translation". We heard what we heard. One little translation is needed; when he pouts about "inhuman treatment of immigrants", that is simply woke double-speak for the reasonable enforcement of our borders and immigration laws. The bishops here are constantly spewing forth such bile, so this is nothing new.
Compliments of LifeSite News, we have Archbishop Vigano's reaction to these scandalous remarks by Leo. Westin reports of the rebuke to Leo from Kristin Hawkins, president of Students for Life., as well as reminding us (and Leo) of the clarity provided by then-Cardinal Ratzinger. For the text of the late Pope's meme, read here, paying close attention to paragraph three. By the way, that is the same memo that was supposed to have been given to the US bishops at their Denver meeting in 2004, but was only relayed in part to the bishops, by then-Cardinal McCarrick and Bishop Gregory, who was USCCB president at that time.
You can see Vigano's rebuke - or fraternal correction - of Leo in that clip. Of importance, too, is the idolatrous emphasis on climate-change junk-science that seem to fascinate Leo. In future posts, I will touch upon Leo's heretical takes on "climate change", the death penalty, and illegal border-crashing: all of which are favorite talking points of progressives and atheists everywhere.
Another pet cause of theirs seems to be the attempts to legitimize transgenderism and other sexual perversions. We saw that last month when LGBTQ "catholics" were allowed to process through the Holy Door at St Peter's Basilica last month during the jubilee 2025 events. While this profanation of the Basilica wasn't organized by the Vatican, it was allowed to occur, with no protest from either Leo nor the Vatican.
Returning to the matter of Dubin's award, he apparently decided to decline it. Whether or not this was at the behest of Cupich, in order to forestall a loud protest outside the event remains unknown. Could it be that Durbin has a more refined Catholic sense than Cardinal Cupich? I think that is highly possible, although that isn't saying very much.
