In this Vortex episode we are reminded that many priests get their start by being altar boys. He also explains why altar girls have an inhibiting effect on future vocations. At the risk of putting a damper on recent events in Rome, this is one area where the newly-beatified John Paul II dropped the ball - by not putting the kibosh on altar girls. However, to his immense credit, the late Holy Father penned Mulieris Dignitatem (on the Dignity and Vocation of Women). Please read it.
Lest some of you judge me as being misogynistic, know that I happen to be a woman. Also know that you will never see me as lector nor extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, as I do not believe these functions appropriate to a woman (stop that hyperventilating right now!). I'd also like to remind one and all that the holiest human person was Our Blessed Lady - one who would never think to arrogate the priesthood to herself.
