You might say it sure didn't sound like it from the pulpit. If you were confused, don't feel bad - for I believe that such confusion was desired and intended. What you most likely heard was that it is for the "Catholic Communications and Human Development Campaign".
Uhhh.. Wait a minute now! There is, besides the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, something called the Catholic Communications Campaign - two different things, to be sure. However, what we heard from the pulpit today was a most curious (and I daresay suspicious) amalgamation of those two names! When I blogged this last month, I was unaware of the existence of the Catholic Communications Campaign. Still, this collection just doesn't pass the smell test. If they're merely doing both on the same Sunday, why didn't they just say so openly? Here is the second collection schedule from the Archdiocesan web site (click this link, then click the pdf link to open it). You'll see not only this strangely-named collection, but you'll notice that the usual November collection for the CCHD is gone.
Please take the monies you might have contributed and give them directly to a worthwhile charity, such as your local pro-life pregancy center. Also, in next week's collection, drop a note in the basket to explain precisely why you have given no money; let this be an educational moment for the Archdiocese. The American Life League developed cards for such purpose; here they are.
Because this collection is just one day away, I ask that you spread word of this quickly and to as many people as you possibly can.
FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS GIVE TO CCHD!
