Denial Runs Strong In Surprising Places

As I mentioned yesterday, too many good Catholics are in denial regarding the reality that we currently have a pope who poses a danger to souls every time he opens his mouth.  Am I saying that the pope intends this damage?  I of course cannot say one way or the other, although common sense indicates the affirmative.  I will say, however, that regardless of his motives, he indeed is causing real damage.

Therefore it troubles me greatly when prominent Catholic pro-life leaders advocate the continuance of denial.  When they do so, they unwittingly act as to dissuade their readers from discerning the input that feeds their souls.  Thus these deniers contribute to the spiritual damage already being wrought by the pope's harmful words.

A sad "case in point" is found in an article by Judie Brown, co-founder and president of American Life League.  ALL has always been in the forefront of the Catholic pro-life movement as they have correctly pointed out the spiritual destruction caused by contraception.  The article is to be found in RenewAmerica entitled "The Pope Francis Effect".  While I respect Mrs. Brown highly, I have no choice but to refute this.

Let's bring in the first two sentences:  "Over the last week, considering all the events that Pope Francis participated in during his six-day visit to Mexico and the many lives he touched with his words, his actions, and his very presence, it seems so sad that only one or two sentences from one interview captured our attention. It is as though nothing else happened that week."  The effects of his trip to Mexico are debatable at best, but I won't broach that for now.  Suffice it to say that any (debatable) benefit from his trip was far outweighed by the heresy against morals in his "one or two sentences".  No amount of benefit will mitigate the immense harm and scandal caused by his stated approval of contraceptives.  For example, consider the morning of April 15, 1865.  Can you just imagine someone asking Mary Todd Lincoln, "Aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?"  Well the notion that we should dismiss the outright heresy because of the "lives he touched" is similarly preposterous.  Let us consider that his heresy is "touching lives", too.

Proceeding down, she says "the pope was speaking off the cuff".  So what?  It was still the pope who was speaking.  "What he said or didn't say really isn't the problem."  Yes it is, when Humanae Vitae, Casti Connubi and Evangelium Vitae are undermined in the eyes of the world by the Vicar of Christ, the "problem" cannot be overestimated.  Perhaps I'm wrong, but I suspect that if it weren't Pope Francis on that plane and instead we had Cardinal Dolan, Cardinal Wuerl or some other progressive shepherd on that plane uttering those exact same words, Mrs. Brown's take on the matter would be decidedly different - and rightly so.

She said that "it is troubling to realize that all the good (?) Pope Francis did during his visit to Mexico was so easily overshadowed by one or two silly comments made to reporters".  I'm glad she acknowledged that, at best, the comments were "silly", but actually they constituted heresy.  Refer to what I wrote of Mrs. Lincoln's experience at Ford Theater.  She might have watched a lovely performance, but when the shots were fired, what constituted the real impact of that evening in her life?

Toward the end she says, "it makes me so sad that we are always so prone to jump on something negative rather than embracing the positive.  No, the positive will never take top billing on the nightly news."  A few things..
  • It seems that Mrs. Brown, at least in this case, has fallen for the "positive versus negative" codswallop.  I've said this many times and now will say so again.  The "positive versus negative" paradigm has nothing to do with objective truth or falsehood of a given statement or situation; rather it is a paradigm that focuses on the emotional impact that said statement or situation has on its beholders.  Obviously whether a situation is "positive" or "negative" depends on whom you ask and their particular disposition - not the objective merits of the same.
  • As far as "top billing on the nightly news", the problem is that the news is abuzz about the whole mess, and viewing what we would consider a "negative" as a "positive".  To wit:
  • The above news sites are on the first page after I googled "pope Francis contraceptives".  Can we all now see the scandal caused by the pope's utterance of heresy?  Please - let's not blame the media for this.  They didn't "bait" him into a trap.  He's a grown-up who is responsible for what he says, just like the rest of us.
My friend at Tenth Crusade, in writing about these matters, states that "we are going to get louder".  Many of the other writes I cited yesterday said the same thing.  I say "amen".

Cardinal Burke's Interview Two Months Ago - Truth With Clarity

Two months ago, Cardinal Burke gave an interview for a Polish magazine - naturally published in Polish.  LifeSiteNews has obtained an English translation of it.  In this interview, Cardinal Burke has outlined with clarity Christian truths as they impact our culture at large.

I urge careful attention to be paid to questions 7 and 10 - and most especially # 10.  Consider that in light of the HHS contraception mandate cases being heard by the US Supreme Court; oral arguments commenced today.

Today came the news that something called the "National Coalition of American Nuns" has sided with the Obamanistas and support the contraception mandate, throwing their fellow Catholics under the bus.  Of course, what also went under the bus are their religious vows.  Perhaps they should study question 7 in the Burke interview.

Judie Brown of American Life League and Rush Limbaugh weighed in on the interview as well.

Systemic Ills Of Catholic Hospitals

On Tuesday I put up a post detailing why the bishops' suit against the HHS mandate is compromised by their own checquered history when it comes to holding Catholic hospitals to Catholic standards.  I mentioned that Michael Voris would be going into great detail on his Wednesday Mic'd Up program.  He did.  As guests, he featured Judie Brown of American Life League and Dr. Sandra Happeny of Catholichospitals.org.  The youtube archive has been released for your viewing.

The Dolan Diagnosis Is Online And Here

First, please take some time to review another open letter to Cardinal Dolan, this one written by Hugh Brown, son of ALL president Judie Brown.  Then, if you missed Wednesday's Mic'd Up Show, you can watch the video (full version) below, where Michael Voris and Judie Brown discuss the latest cesspool created by Cardinal Dolan during his "Meet The Press" interview.

Cdl Dolan Snubbed Judie Brown But Dined With Obama

There are times when I think I heard it all, when it comes to priorities of some prelates which can only be called "whacked out".  Those times generally don't last too long for I invariably am taken aback by new whoppers (ht - Pewsitter).  That happened again as I read Judie Brown's blog piece today.

Judie Brown, as most in the pro-life community know, is founder and president of American Life League, a leading Catholic and pro-life organization.  In her article today, she relates how then-bishop Timothy Dolan backed out on an invitation by Pro-Life Wisconsin to give the invocation at their annual banquet in 2009.  Why did he do that?  Because Ms. Brown was to be the keynote speaker.

American Life League Weighs In On The Persecution Of Father Guarnizo

Judie Brown, President of American Life League, issued a press release today, stating that "Barbara Johnson Owes Mother and Catholic Church An Apology".  She raises many good points.  My only comment would be more of an addition: Ms. Johnson owes Father Guarnizo an apology, as does the Archdiocese of Washington.

From my friend at Les Femmes, here are some good ones.

Two Blog Posts Regarding Father Guarnizo's Situation

Catholics online are coming to Father Guarnizo's defense - both against the venomous progressive sites that act as water-boys for the gays, and against the feckless bureaucrats of the DC chancery.

V for Victory has an excellent piece entitled "The Persecution of Father Guarnizo".  In it, she states why she believes that the analysis provided by canon lawyer Ed Peters is remiss in considering key facts.  Read for yourselves.

I also commend to your reading the opinion of Judie Brown, president of American Life League, on this matter.  I join her in denouncing the regrettable "apology" issued by Bishop Knestout (with the approval, if not direction, of Cardinal Wuerl).

I will soon release my analysis (for what it's worth) of the very flawed "apology".

Catholics In The Public Square

The Holy Father has released his message regarding Lent 2012 (click here if you can't see embedded video).

Please notice that he did not say anything about "carbon fasts", unscrewing our lighbulbs or using less water when we bathe.  He speaks of conversion and of fraternal correction.  We might recall that the first of the seven Spiritual Works of Mercy is to Admonish the Sinner.  It means precisely that.  While we speak the truth in charity, we also recall that if we don't speak the entire truth, we exercise no true charity.

I commend to your reading this excellent article by Judie Brown, president of American Life League.  While she applauds the recent statements of the bishops in the wake of Obama's act of tyranny, she reminds us all that in many ways the bishops bear the blame for allowing themselves to be silenced and for not admonishing the pro-abortion politicians who claim to be Catholic.  She seems to complement the Holy Father's address quite well.

Both Mrs Brown and Father John Zuhlsdorf call for such fraternal correction from the bishops in the case of Nancy Pelosi, who flat out said that she supported Obama's act of tyranny against not only Catholics but all peoples of good conscience who are now seeing themselves threatened for abiding by those same conciences.  (click here if you can't see the video on Fr Z's post).  I echo Father Z's call for obedience to Canon 915 on the part of Cardinal Wuerl and Archbishop Niederauer in Pelosi's case.

In The Push To Defund Planned Parenthood, Where Are Our Bishops??

Not only from this blog, but from many other pro-life and conservative sources have you heard the clarion call to lobby Congress for Planned Parenthood's defunding.  However, quite deafening has been the silence of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.  Judie Brown of American Life League explores this oddity (well, maybe not so odd, coming from the USCCB).  Among other things, she points out the occurence of this struggle with the concurrent announcement from the New York bishops that they will be disobeying Canon 915 with respect to their local politicians.

I also suggest you read this piece by William Mayer.  He illustrates the dependence of Catholic Charities upon Federal dollars.  67% of their budget comes from the Federal government.  I too was struck by that as I examined Catholic Charities tax returns on Guidestar.  He suggests that they are being blackmailed into silence; actually, I think "bribed" might be more accurate than "blackmailed", but it's the same idea.  I also think the same could be true for many of the state Catholic conferences.  Why else this abysmal silence on the part of the shepherds who should be leading the charge?

Judie Brown on KofC Cowardice

Judy Brown, president of American Life League, has some choice words to say about the mess that John Marrella et al have made of the credibility of the Knights of Columbus.

I echo Judy's suggestion that what is needed is a mass exodus in protest.  Rip up your cards publicly.  Barring that, you might try not paying your dues in protest.  Then when the brass threatens you with expulsion, point out the irony of them allowing fomenters of baby-murder to prowl their halls while driving decent Catholic men away.
