Gonzaga Commencement - 2009

I came across this video by accident.  This seems to indicate that Gonzaga has developed, or is developing, a pattern of putrifying its commencement exercises.  They are "performing" (using the term loosely) the song "Circle of Life" from the Lion King.  Whatever else one might think of that song, it has no place in a Catholic Church.  Yes, you "men for others".  St Aloysius Church is precisely that - a Catholic Church, where Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament deserves complete honor.  Here's the video (Click here if you can't see embedded videos).

I must say, however, that a repeat of the above performance would have been the "lesser of two evils" in comparison with Sister Carol Keehan's presence there.

  1. Remember when you criticized Gonzaga students for using "ad hominem" attacks? It's funny, you see, because above you say that they are "'performing' (using the term very loosely) the song." Who is the child now?

  2. What I said was not an "ad hominem" attack. I disapprove of that performance in the Church, and yes, in my opinion, the performance was lackluster even if it were in a theatrical production. In the first part, I said it was inappropriate for a church; in the second part, I simply gave my opinion as to the quality of singing, etc. Look up "ad hominem"; the definition does not encompass all unfavorable opinion.

  3. Why would the quality of the singing relate to restoring dc Catholicism? This is where the ad hominem argument is built in in that you make a special break in your criticism of what they are doing to comment on how they are doing with it. It seems logical that you are not in keeping with your own argument; I say this because by taking the role of a critic you are in fact willfully partaking in the production.

Seeing that I possess no objection to the morality of this action, I am here to tell you that Nick Leon, the main singer in the "Circle of Life", received multiple awards that year from all around the area including the Archdiocese of Washington.

Going to the religious aspect of this performance, I personally believe that it isn't morally objectionable to perform a non religious song in a Church. I can only offer this:
    God "moves us all
    Through despair and hope
    Through faith and love
    Till we find our place
    On the path unwinding
    In the Circle
    The Circle of Life"

I know that this may not be a religious song in a sense but if one interprets it correctly then he or she ought to realize that we as humans share this circle of life together and if we follow it correctly we may unwind our path to the Celestial Kingdom that we here wish to achieve.

I know I will probably not be the last comment on this blog but I ask both Gonzaga students and this Organization to be kind to one another if this ends up to be another debate. I, in the previous escapade between the two factions, was quite rude and I regret it. Please show each other kindness for Jesus said love one another as yourself.

    Thank you

  4. For some reason my original comment either violated courtesy or promoted dissent from the Magisterium, so I have rephrased it to hopefully meet the approval standards. If this blog is open to differing opinions and respectful debate, it should be approved.

When I read the blog post, I thought the same thing as what has already been said. You constantly criticized Gonzaga students for insults, all of which were wrong, yet you yourself attack Gonzaga students for the quality of their performance, which is irrelevant to the morality or immorality of performing the song in church? That sounds a little hypocritical to me.

The young men performing the song are very talented, and they recognize that their talent, like everything else, is a gift from God. By making use of their God-given talent, do they not honor God?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the song was not performed during a Mass. Had the song been performed during Mass, it would absolutely have been wrong; however, it was not. So based on what has been said in this post and in prior posts, singing a non-religious song in a church is wrong and dishonors Jesus Christ, but hurling insults at Sister Keehan and disrupting a graduation ceremony in the very same church is right and does not dishonor Jesus Christ? That reasoning simply does not make sense.

  6. "Look up 'ad hominem'; the definition does not encompass all unfavorable opinion."

I did look it up, thanks for the suggestion.

    Ad hominem:
"appealing to one's prejudices, emotions, or special interests rather than to one's intellect or reason."

You are PREJUDICED against Gonzaga because of its decision to invite Sister Carol Keehan to the graduation. You become so EMOTIONAL over a performance of a Disney song at Gonzaga that you find it your SPECIAL INTEREST to post it on this worthless site rather than use your INTELLECT or REASON and deem this a fairly good performance by a non-professional group of high school boys.

  7. To my last anonymous commenter:
Because I arrived at a different conclusion than you, then I am prejudiced, etc etc? You arranged your post to encompass key words from the definition, and that constitutes proof that you're correct and I'm not?
I leave this comment up so all can behold the irrationality of it - and I pray that you're not a faculty member of Gonzaga (or any school, for that matter).
