CUA Faculty Affiliated With Catholics For Obama

My colleague, "An Archdiocese of Washington DC Catholic" pointed out that Mark Tuohey, a CUA faculty member, is affiliated with Catholics for Obama.  Well, so is fellow CUA professor Stephen Schneck.  Both, by the way, are also on the Board of Directors for Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good,

Look in the middle of the page - Sister Jamie T. Phelps.  Sister??  Here's a brief biography - she too has been affiliated with CUA.  Will her Dominican superiors speak truth to her?  Don't hold your breath!

Also notice that John Sweeney, buddy of Cardinal McCarrick, has voiced his support for a pro-baby-murder candidate.  I'm not surprised.

It looks like we might have to boycott the second collection for CUA - until its leadership finds the will to rein in (or maybe fire) its pro-abortion faculty.

  1. You're kidding, right? Two of the CUA faculty are affiliated with Catholics for Obama and you think this makes the entire school not worth supporting? Have you been there, taken classes there, spoken with the campus chaplain, President Garvey, a wide range of students, or anything of the sort?

    1. Let's suppose that instead of being affiliated with "Catholics for Obama", they were affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan. Would that be just okie-dokie? And by the way - where is President Garvey on this? Don't tell me he doesn't know about this; if I learned of it, why not he? What is he doing about this?

  2. What do you mean by okie-dokie? Would I approve? No. I don't approve of Catholics for Obama either. I don't think it makes sense to condemn the whole school based on two (condemnable) faculty members, though.

President Garvey is actively working to recruit more and younger Catholic faculty members, as laid out in our long range and ten year plans, which you can get a pdf of off CUA's website if you care to.

    1. I daresay that if Dr Garvey discovered any faculty affiliated with the KKK, that he'd have them tossed out on their ears in a heartbeat. At the very least, he'd be denouncing them right and left. I'm glad he's looking for new educators, but that doesn't address the question of Tuohey and Schneck (and I'd bet there are others) and what's being done about them.

  3. I have to agree with Sophie. As a recent CUA grad, I received a very orthodox education there. Please reconsider boycotting and instead bring your concerns to the administration.

  4. I'm getting the distinct impression that what has got some folk's attention is the prospect of money drying up, as opposed to spiritual/moral rot within the faculty. Is this indicative of priorities?

    1. I tend to agree. If I had the money, I would write Dr. Garvey a letter saying that I would love to give them a lot of money, but I can't until Tuohey and Schneck are gone or recant. That way they know why it is being withheld, and what they can do about it.

  5. No, what's gotten my attention is the condemnation of an entire university's orthodoxy based on two faculty and two vaguely-CUA-related people. I'm sure CUA can survive without the financial contribution of one person more or less, and I'm sure CUA has lost more donations over the decision to sue the federal government over the HHS mandate.
However, the fact that you don't seem to know very much about the school at all leads me to believe that this is a discussion that's not really worth pursuing further. (By the way, President Garvey is not a doctor, and it's not nearly as easy as you seem to think it is to have a tenured professor tossed out on his ears.)

    1. The real question is, and it's one that you seem to be dodging, is "can CUA survive spiritually if they look the other way while they harbor professors that are openly supportive of a pro-abortion politician"? Just look at Georgetown for an answer to that.
