Catholic Beliefs Not Subject To Popular Vote

One of my favorite lines from "Chariots of Fire" came from the mouth of the character of Eric Liddell's father: "The kingdom of God is not a democracy; the Lord never seeks reelection."  That hailed from a time of common sense.  But common sense isn't that common anymore.

The Holy Father reiterated that point yesterday during a meeting with the International Theological Commission.  He defined an authentic "sensus fidelium" as coming only from Catholics who actively participate in the life of the Church and follow the teachings of the Pope and bishops.  He went on to say that "it is not some kind of ecclesial public opinion and it is unthinkable to use it to contest the teaching of the magisterium.."  I urge you to read the entire article for yourselves.

To those "cafeteria katholycs":  No one can say "the cafeteria is closed" for there never was an authentic "cafeteria" in the first place - merely a facade of such.  I thank the Holy Father for again stating the truth unambiguously.  If you don't appreciate it, you have two choices:

  1. Repent of your disbelief and/or rebellion.  Go to Confession and study your faith.  Your eternal life depends on it.
  2. Continue on your merry way, but hopefully not for long, for this "merry way" will lead to eternal damnation should you be in your rebellious state at your time of death.

  1. Brava! It is pride that keeps us from believing, accepting, and proclaiming the teachings of the Church.

The million dollar question is what are the pope and bishops teaching? Here's a quote from the WaPo (which was repeated in the ADW Catholic Standard as well) from St. Lukes Bladensburg, MD when they joined the Catholic Church:

"Leaders of the church said Monday that they were not leaving the Episcopal Church because of the ordination of gays and women — issues that have bitterly divided the American wing of the Anglican Church and coincided with stepped-up efforts by the Vatican to reach out to Anglicans. Instead, church members said, they were satisfying their longing for a clear religious authority by welcoming the leadership of Pope Benedict XVI."

If all you want is "ein volk ein reich ein führer" benedict's statement and that of the leaders of St Luke's is reassuring--and being reassured you and MVoris should stop protesting and organzing petitions, because the Church is not a democracy and what Benedict has said is that the magisterium means whatever the bishops and Pope says it means and your job is to FOLLOW...

    1. The Magisterium does not exist independent of the Pope. In no way have we ever protested the teachings of the Church. Rather, we have protested the non-implementation of the Church's teachings and laws. Take the issue of Canon 915 for example. It states quite plainly that those who publicly engage in serious sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion. Period. There is no provision for "pastoral options" to allow the Ted Kennedys, John Kerrys, Nancy Pelosis of the world to commit sacrilege against the Blessed Sacrament. Such "pastoral options" are acts of defiance against the magisterium. That happens with frequency in Washington and (I understand) New York. Moreover, priests such as Father Guarnizo have been PUNISHED for upholding Canon Law. We will decry and protest these acts of disobedience to the magisterium.

Another directive from the Vatican is that pro-abortion persons are not to be given places of honor at Catholic functions. Any move to do so is defiance to the Vatican. Some examples are the feting of Obama at the Al Smith Dinner (and at Notre Dame in 2009). In 2010 Sister Carol Keehan was the commencement speaker just months after she was instrumental in shoving ObamaHellCare down our throats. We had to protest that and we did so - to uphold the magisterium. I could go on and on, but reasonable people get the point.

  3. I wonder if this is the same speech that he gave before the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace calling for the "construction of a world community, with a corresponding [dictatorial] authority," to serve the "common good of the human family.""
