From The Et Tu Brute Department: Mark Shriver To Give Commencement Address At Mount St Mary's - Act Now To Stop This

In his book, Goodbye Good Men, Michael Rose extolled the seminary at the Mount as being one of the few decent ones that weren't overrun by gay pervert infestation.  Of course he wasn't speaking about the Mount at large, so maybe the seminary has been spared from participating in the immorality that must have underpinned this regrettable invitation.  Shriver will speak Saturday May 11 and receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters.  The abortion he advocates is anything but "humane".

As I look at the Board of Trustees, I see that Msgr John Enzler, of Catholic Charities notoriety, is on the board.  I perceive his paw-prints all over this invitation.

The Cardinal Newman Society has more information.  I've also posted on Shriver and the ridiculous pandering he's received from Churches and other Catholic organizations.  You'll also see in that anthology that faithful Catholics (including Yours Truly) have picketed him during some of those occasions.

Timothy Trainor, president of the university, can be contacted here.  Again, looking at the Board of Trustees, we see the name of Archbishop Lori on there.  Of course he'd be there, since the Mount is located within the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  It is worth noting that he attended seminary at the Mount.  He should also be contacted here.

We must ask them to withdraw the invitation to this pro-abortion person.  Else, they are flagrantly violating the directives set for in the USCCB's "Catholics In Political Life".  Will we picket this commencement?  The answer to that question is very much up to the Mount.

Also, please lodge your protests on the Mount's social media sites: Facebook and Twitter.

  1. If no cancellation of honoring Mark Shriver, will the Cardinal Newman Society remove "The Mount" from its list of recommended colleges as it did with "Our Lady of the Hoop" (i.e., Providence College)? N.B.: The Franciscan University of Steubenville is "on notice."

    1. At the end of their piece, they stated that their recommendations weren't written in stone, so that indicates to me that they just might downgrade the Mount's status if the latter doesn't remember that it's obliged to adhere to Catholic principles.

    2. Dear DC,

A correction: (with all charity and respect, of course) The book "Goodbye, Good Men" was written by Michael Rose, not Jimmy Akin. :^)

      God bless you.

    3. They probably will, they certainly should. My daughter is a junior there and we feel cheated and uncalled. Shame on Trainor.

  5. There is a homily on the website of the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament in Washington, by Msgr. John Enzler.

    http://www.blessedsacramentdc.org/sermon/father-john-enzler-labor-day-weekend/

Most people would consider it a rip-roaring pro-life homily, presenting many horrible truths about abortion, but toward the end, Enzler is careful to let his pro-abortion Democrat parishioners TOTALLY OFF THE HOOK. I.e., he assures them that NOTHING he has said about abortion has anything whatever to do with voting. At the time of the Kavanaugh nomination, the Washington Post coverage made very clear that Blessed Sacrament is teeming with pro-abortion Democrats (Mark Shields is an usher, etc.) and priests who are careful not to offend them, and preach vigorously and often about "the poor" and "migrants."

    1. I don't know if Shriver is a parishioner there. Chris Matthews is.

  6. A college is either on or off the Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) list. It has no middle ground or gradation of an institution's Catholicity. A long time ago, the Society reported that Notre Dame was not added to the list because of its "deficiencies." The CNS article says each institution is re-evaluated for each new annual edition. As I said above, Providence College was removed from the list, and Franciscan U. of Steubenville is in effect "on notice."

  7. So in the spirit of Charity:
Prayer for the redemption of judgmental laity
From becoming so-called watchdogs of priests- deliver us!
From running to the bishop when we disagree with our pastor- deliver us!
From attempting to spiritually form our priests instead of ourselves- deliver us!
From thinking we are being more Catholic than the Pope- deliver us!
From setting a higher standard for priests that we would never follow ourselves- deliver us!
From setting clergy and laity against one another for personal gain- deliver us!
Lord hear out prayer; AMEN! Saint John Vianney Pray for us!!!!

    1. Spirit of charity - or spirit of denial and/or actual agreement with the deviation from morals? You need to read some of Summa Theologica, friend. Bu the way, does the Berkeley in your handle signify allegiance to that hotbed of progressivism in CA?

    2. Dear Squiggy, It is human nature to take the moral high ground which you have done and which you accuse others of doing, but consider this: I live in Los Angeles. Suppose 35 years ago I had approached Archbishop (later Cardinal) Mahony, and sternly warned him about shuffling licentious priests around and told him in no uncertain terms that he was to be blamed for gross misconduct in that regard, and that he would be watched and monitored by civilian authorities. Think of the incredible good that would have resulted. No 600 million + payout, abuse nipped in the bud, fewer lives ruined etc. Would you then judge me as judgmental etc.?

    3. With a “name” like Squigglyberkley, what can one expect! LOL!
      Troll ALERT!!!
Your apparent attempt at humor is pathetic and a mockery of the Catholic faith. Although, I doubt you’re truly Catholic...,...Sadly, you may be more Catholic than the “pope”.

  9. As a senior at MSMU and a student asking the Mount to rescind its invitation to Mark Shriner, I am incredibly grateful to you for using your platform to make a call to action. We need all the support and prayers we can get as we work to rectify this erroneous decision.
