Bishop Lori To Be Archbishop Of Baltimore

It has been announced that Bishop William Lori will assume Cardinal O'Brien's position as Archbishop of Baltimore.  Before he was bishop of Bridgeport, Bishop Lori was an auxiliary bishop within the Archdiocese of Washington.  Lori has chastised the Obama regime repeatedly over the HHS contraception mandate.

  1. I bet the Obama regime is just shakin' in its boots:

"2007: After fighting a proposed state law to require hospitals to provide "emergency contraceptive services,'' including the Plan B "morning after" pill, Lori and the state's two other Catholic bishops announce that Catholic hospitals will comply. "

"After attempting to fight the law, Bishop Lori stated in 2007 that “reluctant compliance” was “the only viable option.”

"Another case, however, showed that Lori also knows the value of a strategic retreat. In 2007, Connecticut mandated that all hospitals provide emergency contraception to rape victims, a mandate that Lori and the other Connecticut bishops resisted much as they have the White House’s current contraception mandate.

Within months, Connecticut bishops said they had undergone “an evolution in thinking” and now believed that the Plan B pill would not necessarily cause an abortion and so could be used at Catholic medical facilities."

Appeasement is the only "viable" option. And what is the result of appeasement? A bigger monster and the appeaser becomes "the champ".

It is amazing the "fights" he won in CT (keeping state/lay hands off the church's money) and the fights he lost (emergency contraception/abortion, civil unions, & gay marriage). He also has a record of going easy on egregious gay priests (he went to St. Mary's w/in the 70s (Fr Michael Fay - whom he appointed to "Sexual Misconduct Review Board")) also Fr. Tim Klunk of Baltimore)

while hounding out of the priesthood (or assigning to convents like Fr. Pavone) those who expose the embezzling homosexual high jinks.

I hope Fr. Lori (and his mother) enjoy his dream come true wonderful new house at 408 N. Charles Street. That's what every priest dreams of (not heaven or saving souls or helping the poor)... "advancing the COMMON good"

    1. Yes, I remember all that. That's why my response to this announcement was tepid at best. On the other hand, Baltimore could have gotten someone much worse than that.

  2. Nothing could be worse in God’s eye for the individual soul or local Church: “I would thou wert cold or hot. But because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth. Rev3:15-16

“Zeal for your house will consume me.” (Jn 2:17) “One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.” Ps 27:4. “Thank you so much for your very warm hospitality at 408 N. Charles Street –I’ve been in that house many times but I never dreamt I would live there and my mother still doesn’t think that I’ll ever live in a house quite that historic and wonderful.” Wm. Lori, new Archbishop of Baltimore speaking of his new personal residence

March 11 you posted it was “significant” that the gospel was John’s cleansing of the temple at the mass Fr. G’s suspension was announced. I had to attend an annual memorial mass once at a Catholic nursing home where staff had encouraged my family to team with them to kill a relative; I was amazed when I heard the same gospel--it was the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (the mother church of Christendom) which superseded the ordinary Sunday.

St. Th. Aquinas interpretation: 381 …We should note that the devil plots against the things of God and strives to destroy them. Now among the means by which he destroys holy things, the chief is avarice; hence it is said: “The shepherds have no understanding. All have turned aside to their own way; everyone after his own gain, from the first one to the last” (Is 56:11). And the devil has done this from the earliest times... 383. This can be understood mystically in three ways. First of all, the merchants signify those who sell or buy the things of the Church: for the oxen, sheep and doves signify the spiritual goods of the Church and the things connected with them….Therefore, those who presume to sell the spiritual goods of the Church and the goods connected with them are selling the teachings of the apostles [oxen], the blood of the martyrs [sheep], and the gifts of the Holy Spirit [goats]. Secondly, ...certain prelates or heads of churches sell these oxen, sheep and doves, not overtly by simony, but covertly by negligence; that is, when they are so eager for and occupied with temporal gain that they neglect the spiritual welfare of their subjects. And this is the way they sell the oxen, sheep and doves, i.e., the three classes of people subject to them. First of all, they sell the preachers and laborers, who are signified by the oxen…because prelates ought to arrange the oxen, i.e., teachers and wise men, with the donkeys, i.e., the simple and uneducated. They also sell those in the active life, and those occupied with ministering, signified by the sheep… They also sell the contemplatives, signified by the doves.”

  3. [St.Th Aq continued]
384 The Lord’s remedy ... 385… First, he drives the men out. Secondly, the oxen and sheep. Thirdly, he sweeps away the money. He drives the men out with a whip; and this is what he says, when he had made a kind of whip from cords. This is something that could be done only by divine power…He makes the whip from cords because, as Augustine says, it is from our own sins that he forms the matter with which he punishes us: for a series of sins, in which sins are added to sins, is called a cord: “He is bound fast by the cords of his own sins” (Prv 5:22); “Woe to you who haul wickedness with cords” (Is 5:18).” [sex abuse scandals (?)]

    392. “…Zeal, properly speaking, signifies an intensity of love, whereby the one who loves intensely does not tolerate anything which is repugnant to his love… one is said to have zeal for God who cannot patiently endure anything contrary to the honor of God, whom he loves above all else: “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts” (1 Kgs 19:10)… Indeed, we should love it so much that our zeal consumes us, so that if we notice anything amiss being done, we should try to eliminate it, no matter how dear to us are those who are doing it; nor should we fear any evils that we might have to endure as a result. So the Gloss says: “Good zeal is a fervor of spirit, by which, scorning the fear of death, one is on fire for the defense of the truth. He is consumed by it who takes steps to correct any perversity he sees; and if he cannot, he tolerates it with sadness.”

In reading this passage myself this time, I saw the overturning of “the tables” and “take these out of here” regarding “the doves” applied to our current sanctuaries.
To me the issue is beyond the marketplace, and what Jesus curses the “scribes (“teachers” some translations) and Pharisees” for in Matt23:13 & 15 is happening: “because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for you yourselves do not enter in and those that are going in, you suffer not to enter” and “because you go round about the sea and the land to make one proselyte. And when he is made, you make him the child of hell twofold more than yourselves.”
Coming up on Palm Sunday, it is worth thinking about what happens when God visits His Temple: "my house is a house of prayer". In Jan 2011, I found this which takes Matthew’s cleansing of the Temple (Matt 21:12-16) & also Matt 3:11-12. My (bad) summary: 1. (V12) Purity – God purifies. Ask God to remove everything that doesn’t belong in your life (Aquinas also 383 “Thirdly”). Cleansing of the Temple is first public act of Jesus in John. Other gospels begin w/John the Baptist: must repent & be baptized w/water before Holy Spirit (also John C3 born again of water). 2. (V13) Purity initiates prayer; 3. (V14) Prayer brings healing (blind and lame came to the Temple and were healed); 4.(V15-16) Perfected praise of God: seeing the wonderful things He did and the children crying in the temple “Hosanna to the Son of David” – Jesus answered, “Out of the mouths of infants and sucklings you have perfected praise?” It is short–watch it (Start at: 4:40-14:18).

St. Teresa of Avila in “The Interior Castle” also talks about the temple inside of us where God dwells and how to get there. “Insofar as I can understand the door of entry to this castle is prayer and reflection.” I.1.7

It is also interesting to look at Isaiah 56 about house of prayer (where Jesus' quote comes from).
