When Emotions Trump Intellect And Will - The Father Ray Kelly Fiasco

Several days ago, at a nuptial Mass in Ireland, the priest decided it was time for a "lovely moment" so he broke out in song.  However he did so during Mass - constituting liturgical abuse.  The video went viral, with people everywhere gushing over the priest's voice, how touching it was, and on and on.

A few of us tried to talk some sense (you know, as in logic and reason and fidelity to rubrics), but apparently we're resented as a bunch of mean ole party-poopers.  Even many Catholics are swallowing the nonsense "hook, line and sinker".  I am not sure what troubles me more: the liturgical abuse itself, or, what passes for reason and discourse in Catholic circles.  For the moment I'll not consider the reactions of non-Catholics for they would not have had opportunity for proper education regarding such matters.

I brought up the fact that Mass is not about the people as much as it is about the Unbloody Sacrifice of Our Lord.  I pointed out that the priest is "alter Christi" and is not about the business of attracting attention to himself (don't you think all the gushing over his "talent" should have been a clue?).  For those who tried to trot out the "legalist" schtick, I pointed out that Jesus Christ, through His Magisterium, had His Hand on the creation of the rubrics.  But nope!  None of that mattered one iota?  Wanna know what the supreme consideration was when opining about this performance?  And several said this, so I'll put it in quotes!  Wait for it!!  Here it is!

"It was so bee-yoo-tee-fulll, it just moved me to tears!  Sigh!  Sob!"

Got that?  It's all about emotions!  Forget the fact that Our Lord informs our intellect and strengthens our wills.  Intellect and will just don't amount to a hill of beans when emotions are being tugged and manipulated.

See the big problem there?  Men and women are created in the image and likeness of God, particularly through our faculties of intellect and will.  Of all God's creatures, only men and angels possess these faculties.  Emotions are on a lower level.  Animals have emotions, but they don't have intellect and will to render them made in the image and likeness of God.  This over-exaltation of emotions is nothing more than a degradation of man, impelling him to live in a lower, animal-like plane of existence.  And let's face it.  It's more palatable to our fallen natures to lower ourselves to that plane; it requires less effort to indulge our emotions rather than discipline them to be ordered by intellect and will.

The Culture of Death is prevailing largely because more and more people are living solely in their emotions and are not exercising intellect and will.  The Voris video I just posted shows how homofacism is progressing largely because they are manipulating the emotions of those who are largely undisciplined intellectually and who are most likely not pursuing Christ through His Church.

Below I post the video.  I think if you look at the beginning and end of it you'll see the damage being done without having to subject yourself to the entire bilious debacle.

  1. Ok I saw this go viral and never watched it, since every time I started it was so turned off. But for your sake, I watched it and just don't get it. It was obvious it was out of place, as was the clapping and whistling ! Our "dancing with the stars" culture has
finally taken over, even the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Thanks for speaking up. Our dear friends don't understand and so
it is up to up Janet with this platform to try and point the way. And try we must, even if our society is too far gone. Like the
camel with his nose under the tent, he is totally in the tent. It all started so long ago with the Novus Ordo. We have lost our way. What next…..

  2. The entire camel is in the tent. This is a scene right out of the old Saturday Night Live. All it needs is "more cowbell." What a disgrace!

  3. Rubbish.. Father Kelly has done more to make people want to go to church with this video. I was forced as a catholic by nuns to go to church every week.. SO BAD.. If I had a priest like him I would go back to church..

  4. You won't approve my comment i bet.. That's ok.. Let's not be open minded.. 26000000 people are wrong.. I think not. Have a good day

    1. Newimacman, I'll reply to both your comments here. If you had a priest like him you would go back to church? Why? So you can be entertained? Holy Mass is about us offering worship to Our Lord and Savior, not us getting some sort of jollies from it. What we do get is something much more valuable: we receive the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Himself. Mass is the celebration of His Sacrifice, a Sacrifice He made for each and every one of us. And you would disdain that simply because the priest you have now is not sufficiently entertaining? You have some serious issues my friend - issues that I pray you'll face and repent of, while you still have time to make a good confession.

Now as far as these "26000" folks go, you can put 50 more zeros after that and it won't amount to a hill of beans compared to God's will expressed through His church. In case you haven't noticed, God places little stock in public opinion polls. And as GK Chesterson once said, "don't be so open-minded that your brains fall out".

Again I'm praying for you, for by your disdain for Holy Mass you are jeopardizing your immortal soul. Go to Confession during this Holy Week, why not?

    2. What is wrong with being entertained while you worship?
I have serious issues!! Tell that to the nuns that forced me to go to church and beaten if I didn't go. Is that the catholic way to get people in church?

  5. Not all of us that went to Catholic school got beaten by nuns. I had a great experience. Being "Entertained" at mass is superficial and insulting. It will never get anybody into Heaven. It merely pushes the "Feel Good" buttons and does nothing for the reflection of ones conscious and ability to examine the soul.

  6. "ME" MAC MAN: Bearing false witness against your neighbor is a serious sin - violates the 10 commandments - could get you 'forced' into hell where you will suffer for all eternity. What do you mean by 'beaten' - i.e. were you scourged like Jesus Christ before the crucifixion, pounded with fists, kicked, paddled, hit with a ruler and stood in a corner, etc.? Were you Catholic? Was this a boarding school? Who enrolled you into the school? What did your parents do to you on Sunday if you didn't go to mass with them? What did these nuns do if you didn't turn in your homework or refused to come back into class after recess or talked back, etc. i.e. what was the punishment for violating school rules (or were you only beaten for not attending mass)? As a Catholic the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the central event of our daily life--even when we can't attend daily (you have undergone death (baptism), and your life is hidden away now with Christ in God. Col 3:3)). It seems like you weren't paying attention when the nuns were attempting to teach you your religion. It's too bad. Could mean life or death to you, because singing priest doesn't care about your salvation--he's too busy using the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on Calvary to glorify himself and get a captive audience. If he wants to be a singer, why doesn't he join the choir or go to Hollywood? If he wants to minister to God in the sanctuary, why doesn't he do that?

    1. I love all these people that are anonymous.. You don't have the guts to even use a name. What are you scared of by using a name? Your answer. I don't need a name to worship god. I am SO sorry for you all. I will pray for you, because YOU have serious issues. There is NO WAY I should have been beaten or forced to go to church.. If you think Jesus or god agrees I will find out when I die. I have spoken to one of my friends today about what I have posted here .. He says to you all.. "get a life!!" By the way I am Catholic.

    2. I repeat my assertion that you have some serious issues. Yes, you will die one day as we all will. When you face our Lord, you will not be able to say to Him that you would have obeyed "were it not for those nuns". We've all been hurt by people. If we're honest, we'll admit that we too have done our share of injury-inflicting - even you, newimcacman! If we all wallowed in self-pity as you appear to be doing, we'd all be paralyzed by hate and resentment. It's time to grow up, my friend. Seek out a decent priest who can assist you (starting with a good confession).

  7. Nobody has answered. What is wrong with being entertained while you worship? I cannot believe god or jesus would be unhappy with this. I am still worshipping. End of story

    1. I also still worship, but not in the Catholic Church. I, too, was raised in the Catholic faith and abused by nuns (no false witness there). But that was not the reason I left. It was because I finally started using my own mind instead of what the church had brainwahed me into believing. I finally realized that EVERY law of the Catholic Church was ordained by a MAN, not by Jesus. And the laws were changed over and over again to suit whichever corrupt monster happened to be in charge of the church at the time. As many people have been slain by the Catholic Church over the past 2,000 years as there have been by any other religious entity. This also is not bearing false witness. Read your history books.

Jesus does not reside in the Catholic Church in that gold tabernacle. If He did, He would have been very happy to hear the beautiful song this priest sang in honor of the wedding couple. After all, HE changed water into wine at a wedding. Do you not suppose the guests were entertained by that? Hearing Father Kelly's song did more for me spiritually than any catechism class ever did.

There is NOTHING wrong with bein entertained while worshipping. There is a lot wrong with believing that we have to kill Jesus over and over again in a "bloodless sacrifice" and then eat His body and drink His blood in order to worship.

    2. "What is wrong with being entertained"? Nothing - IF the entertainment is incidental and accidental with respect to the main objective of the Mass - worship of God and assistance at the Holy Sacrifice. Anonymous of 5:10 acknowledges the problem (albeit unwittingly) when he says Father performed the song "IN HONOR OF THE COUPLE". Of course he/she shows ignorance of the true wedding feast miracle; a close reading of the steward's reaction reveals that he was unaware a miracle occurred, so he couldn't have been "entertained" by it.

That little songfest removed focus from the Mass and put it where it didn't belong during Mass. Inexcusable. If he really wanted to "honor the couple" appropriately he could have performed during the reception.

Anonymous, it sounds to me like you're brainwashed all right - by every secular whim and fancy that's out to deny the Divinity of Christ and authority of His Church, probably as a flimsy excuse for not taking seriously the moral precepts of Jesus Christ.

      Delete
    3. Please read your last statement, and then read up on the history of Catholicism. All of it. Then decide who uses flimsy excuses for not taking seriously the moral precepts of Jesus Christ.

I would never deny the divinity of Christ. The authority of "His Church"? Again.....go read your Catholic history. Those words have brought nothing good to God's people.

The song was spiritually uplifting to more than 24,000,000 people of those people. Jesus is just fine with that.

Now go take inventory of your own morals.

    4. Ladies and gentlemen, note carefully how anon of 6:55 denies the authority of the Catholic Church (and thus Jesus Christ Himself), then opines that the song was "spiritually uplifting". I'll say this directly. One who disregards the authority of Christ's Church is unable to distinguish apple butter from cow pie in many respects. The song was spiritually degrading. The whistling and carrying on of the people, as though they were at a wrestling match, is ample evidence of that. If you disregard the authority of Christ's Roman Catholic Church, you've no basis for opining what "Jesus is fine with". He certainly isn't "fine" with disregard/disobedience to His Church. You can repeat it all you want, but you only succeed in deluding yourself (at most).

    5. You are the delusional one. I see that you make no mention of my references to the history of the Catholic Church. You just keep babbling about the authority of "Christ's Church". Are you still of the belief that only Catholics can get into heaven? That eating meat on Friday is a mortal sin? That a priest can forgive sin? That the host you eat is the actual body of Christ?

I'm really sorry for you. Your rants are irrational. Perhaps you were traumatized as a child by a bully who robbed you of the ability to use your own intellect and free will. Was it a nun or a priest?

    6. Friend, if you are Catholic, you need to get to Confession pronto. You are dissenting from the Church, placing your soul in grave danger. Laugh this off, if you wish. One day you'll recall this and I hope it won't be with regret.

      Delete
    7. I am not laughing. I am certainly not going to confession. I am a believer in Jesus Christ. Placing your faith in a church before your faith in Him is a sin that places YOUR soul in danger. I'll pray for you. I did not realize that the Catholic Church still had such a stranglehold on anyone. I hope someday you can accept Jesus as your Savior, and let go the trappings of a church created by men.

  9. Restore DC is right, entertainment is not the objective at Mass...if it so happens within the objective, it's fine, I suppose. In the words of a priest, the homilies are meant to challenge you, not entertain you...

  10. I had the opportunity on Saturday to meet and talk to an old retired army chaplain. He talked to me about the Shikinah Glory, as in the cloud over the tent of meeting when the Israelites were in the desert. When the cloud was there, they knew their God was there. He also talked about the Shikinah Glory at Mass. He sees the cloud and the presence of our God as he says the words of consecration. I would LOVE to go to a mass with him, as he KNOWS that Christ is truly present. This priests face just glowed and his eyes sparkled as he talked. So he is my choice not the priest singing. Reminded me that I am so grateful to be Catholic.

  11. So sad. I watched the beginning of that show and thought, "Oh, it must be an episcopal priest." Since there was no tabernacle in the background....Well, I guess that just means the tabernacle was off to the side or in a closet. Janet, you are, of course, absolutely right. As for the commenter who thinks Jesus is killed at every Mass in a bloodless sacrifice, he/she needs to read the Catechism. Jesus dies once for all. The Mass is like a time machine that takes us back to that unique event in human history, the Passion, death, and Resurrection of Christ. For those who have left the Church, you have chose symbol over substance. Jesus is physically present in every Catholic Church. When we receive Him in Holy Communion we are more physically united to him than a husband and wife who become "one flesh" can ever be. He is the bread of life. Read John 6. "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you have no life in you....For my flesh is real food and my blood real drink." I thank God for the gift of the Catholic faith and for all those wonderful nuns who taught me. Sr. Germella, please pray for us. As for the person criticizing Anonymous, please. Newimacman is a name? LOL!
